Finding the right vet is only half the equation

Once you’ve chosen a clinic you trust, it also helps to know how to make visits easier on your dog. Below you’ll find our recommendations for local vets, along with some quick trainer tips for keeping vet care a positive experience.

  • Pick the right fit: Choose a vet where you feel comfortable asking questions and your dog feels at ease. Choose a vet who attempts to adapt to the unique needs of your dog and supports your efforts to advocate for your dog.
  • Practice the visit: Stop by the clinic for quick, positive experiences…no shots, just treats. If you are going to a vet office who doesn’t make any time for or encourage practice visits, change vets.
  • Create neutral or good feelings in and around the vet office: Instead of taking a 45 minute walk in your neighborhood…go to the area where your vet is located…simply to play and explore when you don’t even have an appointment.
  • Prep before you go: A nice, wholesome exploration walk or playtime with your dog prior to leaving your home can go a long way.
  • Stay calm inside: Reward relaxed behavior and let the staff do their job. The more nervous and stressed you are, the dog will sense that. Neutrality often wins the day.
  • End on a high note: Follow up with a walk, high value treat / chew, or memorable playtime right after the appointment…even right there on the grounds of the vet office
